Tomatoes are pulled off menus and supermarket shelves over Salmonella fears
June 09, 2008
Fast-food chains and supermarkets in the United States have removed or stopped serving tomatoes tied to a salmonella outbreak that's sweeping the nation.

Officials have preliminary linked raw red plum, red Roma and round red tomatoes as the possible cause of a food scare that's left 145 people sick in 16 states since mid-April.

Health officials have not connected the illnesses to any restaurant chain or food outlet. Yet, as a precaution, dozens of eateries and supermarkets have pulled tomatoes from menus and produce aisles. Markets such as Albertsons, Vons, Ralphs, Wal-Mart and Fresh &Easy began clearing out the tomatoes in question over the weekend.

Major fast-food chains also stopped serving fresh tomatoes
