Maureen Storey wants doctors, dieticians and nutritionists singing the praises of potatoes.

Storey heads the Alliance for Potato Research and Education (APRE) that was formed about one year ago in the United States to combat the decline in potato consumption with scientific facts.

"This industry has recognized that we need the science in order to fight back on the goodness, the deliciousness, the nutritiousness of the potato regardless of the form that it is being prepared in,'' said Storey.

She says the Alliance for Potato Research and Education is focusing its message that potatoes have a place in healthy, balanced diets on groups like dieticians and family doctors that can have considerable influence on what people eat.

Scientists, nutritionists and the like, she believes, may not be totally aware that the spud is a wonderful, nutritious package with very important nutrients such as potassium and dietary fibre.

Maureen Storey was in Charlottetown Friday to speak at the P.E.I. Potato Board's Annual General Meeting. During the event Storey outlined her busy schedule, not only covering similar potato grower meetings, but also presentations for dietetic associations and physician groups.
