The situation in the U.S. sunflower market remains in flux with the potential for additional planted acres depending on weather for the next 10 to 20 days. This also depends on location. The north central area of North Dakota received more rainfall this weekend and it is very likely that sunflower acres will be lost in that area.

Seed company reps report interest in most other areas as farmers run out of time for corn and spring wheat. The High Plains region received additional rainfall in key areas last week providing some opportunity for dryland sunflower acres.

The competition for remaining old crop sunflower remains intense. The potential for a canola crop in Canada and the U.S. is declining with planting delays and the inability to plant in many areas.

The canola crop in Europe will be down from last year due to drought. The sunflower crop in Russia/Ukraine appears to be promising although drought has been mentioned there as well.

Sunflower Planting in the US Making Some Progress

In the United States, the majority of the sunflower historically gets planted in the last week of May and the first 15 days of June. The time frame will likely be extended this year, especially in the Dakotas. Planting in the Dakotas for sunflower is well behind last year and the five-year average. This is true of all crops in the Dakotas.

The planting window is closing for most crops and there is potential for changing to sunflower and other late-season crops. The forecast is somewhat positive for warmer and dry weather over the next several days.

However, some areas in north central North Dakota are not likely to dry out in time for planting of any crop. That region has typically been a key sunflower production area.
