Greenvale AP’s environmentally friendly Vales Sovereign potatoes, which have a lower carbon footprint than traditional varieties, are now available to the catering sector via wholesalers.
Vales Sovereigns are ideal for caterers seeking to lower their carbon footprint, as the potatoes require less water and less fertiliser to grow than other traditional varieties, and are UK-grown.
Doug Bell, general manager of Greenvale at Duns, Berwickshire, who heads the foodservice team, said: “Vales Sovereign is ideal for caterers looking for baking potatoes. In taste panel tests, most comments were along the lines that it 'tasted like potatoes used to'. It's also a great British baker because it is a very robust variety that resists diseases that can spoil the look of jacket potatoes.”
Vales Sovereign was named the 2008 Tesco Fresh Produce Variety of the Year, and is now available from wholesalers under the Jackpots brand in 25kg boxes.
