Enero 26, 2009
The Cuban government invested 40 million dollars to buy items destined to the cultivation of potatoes, a strategy to increase delivery of food to the Cuban population.

The information was given by Cuban Agriculture Vice Minister Juan Perez Lamas Monday.

Perez Lamas stated that the money was used to buy seeds, fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides and other products for the potato cultivation.

A total of 29,652 acres were planted with potato in the national territory, 3,000 more than in the campaign before, in seven Cuban provinces and the Isle of Youth.

Perez Lamas added that 20 varieties coming from Europe and Canada were planted, and also some of national production, some of them highly productive.

The estimate of the production is of 258,000 tons, destined mainly to feed the population, with a small portion going to the tourism sector.
