The affected potato growers whose potatoes were damaged in Kaltahar Cold storage in Islampur in 2003 and did not receive any compensation yet today turned up in the premises of Kaltahar cold storage in Islampur and started agitation under the banner of Khatigrastha Alu Chsi Samiti. With a demand of immediate compensation they blocked the cold storage under lock and key for indefinite period.
It was reported that in 2003 a huge amount of potatoes were damaged in this cold storage due to leakage of ammonia gas. Around 1.8 crore amount of potatoes of more than 3500 farmers were damaged.
Since then the affected potato growers started demanding compensation. With this demand they submitted a memorandum to SDO Islampur several times and blocked National Highway 31 in Islampur. But they were not paid till date.
