India potato growers protest over non-availibility cold storage

Abril 04, 2008
Potato growers were holding a demonstration over the non-availability of space in cold storages even as the district administration claimed that the storages had enough space to accommodate around 32,000 quintals of potatoes.

Farmers are already forced to sell potatoes at as low as Rs 200 per quintal.

In a related incident, hundreds of potato growers of Kanpur and Farukkhabad protested against the district authorities over poor crop storage and falling prices.

Ashok Kumar, a Kanpur-based farmer, said cold storage houses were running full and the crop was unattended. If this continues, the crop will be lost.
