Organic potatoes conquer Peruvian supermarkets

Organic potatoes conquer Peruvian supermarkets
November 17, 2011
The Peruvian farmers cooperative Coopain Cabana recently made a very lucrative deal that benefits the members and the cooperative itself.

Their own brand of organic potatoes can now be found on the shelves of the supermarkets of Plaza Vea, one of the largest supermarket chains in Peru.

Thanks to this deal, the farmers associated to Coopain Cabana now receive a 25% higher price for their potatoes as compared to the local market.

The cooperative "Agroindustrial Cabana"works in the Cabana district, located in the Andes of Peru at 4000 meters above sea level. Coopain focuses on the collection, processing and marketing of organic quinoa (highly nutritious type of grain) and organic potatoes. The cooperative buys and stores large amounts of potatoes and sells them to the supermarkets.

Agriterra supports Coopain's marketing and promotional activities, for example by giving advice concerning business planning, market research and finance opportunities. The fact that Coopain Cabana is now able to sell its own brand to a supermarket chain like Plaza Vea, is considered a great success.

Up to now the organic potatoes can be bought only in the Plaza Vea stores in Arequipa, the second largest city of Peru. However, plans to also sell the potatoes in the Plaza Vea supermarkets of the cities Tacna and Ica are at an advanced stage.
