Bacterial ring rot in potatoes

Canadian Food Inspection agency officials say there are still only two confirmed cases of bacterial ring rot on two farms on P.E.I., and they are winding down their testing.

The two confirmed cases are on seed potato farms in eastern Queens County. Ring rot is not a threat to human health, but the bacteria causes a ring of rot inside the potato that eventually can destroy the entire thing.

They are the first cases of ring rot on the Island in several years.

"All the investigation testing done to date has not revealed the presence of [ring rot] on other farms in the area,"Alain Boucher, national manager of the potato section of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, told CBC News.
