A new golden age for McDonald’s

McDonald's is fattening up on profits. The world’s largest hamburger chain reported on Tuesday that its quarterly net income jumped 11% as it continued to lure cost-conscious diners.

With its dollar menus and value meals, the fast-food giant has managed to thrive even in tough economic times. Lower-calorie choices like oatmeal and salads have also helped the chain fend off charges its food makes people fat.

This summer it tweaked its kids’ Happy Meals, adding apples and cutting back on fries. It also vowed to trim sodium by 15% in the U.S. by 2015.
