As of October 1, the new JASA packaging line at potato company Nedato in Oud-Beijerland is in operation. Nedato added this new packaging equipment to cope with the demand for smaller packaging in retail.
The new packaging equipment meets the latest requirements. Demand is changing, consumers want smaller packaging, made from sustainable packaging materials, such as packaging made of sugarcane or paper, and now Nedato can deliver on such demands
A changing market
The marketshare of small potato packaging (<2kg) is increasing both in the Netherlands as well as elsewhere. Units <1kg are one of the few packaging sizes that see growth.
These smaller packages are in particular popular with single person households and young families.
In order to meet demand, Nedato invested in a new, user-friendly vertical JASA packaging machine, which is also suitable for the latest packaging trends.
Consumers want less plastic and are searching for alternatives. The new JASA packaging equipment is capable to pack potatoes in foil of sugarcane and even paper, without a plastic coating. This investment fits perfectly in Nedato's strategic vision for its future growth.

Current assortment
For its current assortment of potatoes, Nedato has decided to use a stand-up pouch or doypack. This choice makes it is possible to pack a larger tuber size, one of the wishes of the customer
The foil that is used is slightly tinted to prevent greening and sprouting of the potatoes. To increase shelf life, the packaging is sealed airtight. This helps to reduce food waste. The packaging can be added to plastic waste and can be recycled.
With the addition of this new packaging machine Nedato has made its packaged potatoes a bit more sustainable!
