White potatoes back in US federal nutrition program WIC

Mayo 14, 2008

White potatoes are due to be back in a federal nutrition program for low-income women and children.

After lobbying by Idaho's congressional delegation, the potato was included from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's nutrition programs, including the Women, Infants and Children, or WIC, program.

That's after the agency had published an interim rule that excluded white potatoes - Idaho's signature crop - from the program.

That had the Idaho lawmakers steamed, because potatoes mean about $2 billion toward the state's agricultural economy
