Northern Ireland crisps and snack food company Tayto, which owns Golden Wonder Crisps, has bought Red Mill Snack Foods, which is based in Birmingham.

The latest purchase takes the family-owned group to an annual turnover of over £150m. Tayto is now the third biggest crisps and snacks business in the UK, employing more than 1,400 people across five main sites.

Tayto saved the Golden Wonder crisps brand when it acquired the company in February 2006. Last November Tayto, headquartered in Tandragee, Co Armagh, also bought the successful Welsh-based Real Crisp company.

It is a separate company to the Tayto Crisps business in the Irish Republic, which is owned by Largo Foods.
