A new $65-million state-of-the art potato processing plant began production July 22, replacing the first factory ever built by McCain Foods more than 50 years ago.

The plant, which has been under construction since the spring of 2007, uses the latest technology to provide greater flexibility, improved efficiencies and better capabilities.

The ultra-modern equipment and processes are also creating significant reductions in the use of both energy and water.  The plant will also generate and use biogas, a renewable fuel made from potato waste, to reduce the use of fuel oil.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony marking the official opening of the new plant will be held Sept. 4 in Florenceville. Several dignitaries, including New Brunswick Premier Shawn Graham are expected to attend.

McCain Foods (Canada), the Canadian division of McCain Foods Limited, employs about 3,500 people in 13 facilities across the country.
