Brasil: high prices favor the possibility of importing potatoes

一月 22, 2024

Last week in Brazil, potato prices reached a high point. The main cause is primarily the low supply, a result of various circumstances, and the consequence is that Brazilian traders are looking to meet their demand even with imported potatoes, if necessary.

This scenario is once again attributed to the reduced supply from southern markets due to rains that hindered planting, resulting in a lower supply this month.

Furthermore, the rains recorded in Paraná and Minas Gerais throughout this week also hindered the harvest. Thus, the average price of the special Agata potato was USD 31 /25 kg sack at wholesale in São Paulo/SP, an 8.86% increase.

In Rio de Janeiro, the product was sold at USD 26/sack, a 10.34% increase, and in Belo Horizonte (BH), at USD 23 a 6.06% increase.

Once again, a price range has been reported between the producing regions, with higher-quality potatoes coming from Paraná, while those from Minas Gerais are not ideal. Conditions are set for imports from southern countries like Argentina or Uruguay.
