With summer entertaining just around the corner, Olympic Gold Medalist Heather Moyse is urging Canadians to look beyond the traditional potato salad, and get more creative when cooking their spuds - think potato chocolate cake!

In effort to rebrand the humble potato, and have consumers see the simple spud as the newest, oldest superfood, The Prince Edward Island Potato Board and Olympic athlete today officially launched a recipe series, chockfull of unique dishes, many of which are gluten-free.

“Potatoes from Prince Edward Island are superior to those from other growing areas, due to the unique agricultural properties of our land,” said Greg Donald, General Manager, Prince Edward Island Potato Board. “The Island’s sandy red soil is high in mineral content, which gives our potatoes their unique rich flavour profile.”

Talking taters, Olympic Gold Medalist Heather Moyse will be at the Canadian Produce Marketing Association (CPMA) Trade Show in Toronto on Thursday, April 18th and Friday, April 19th. As a native Islander and a competitive athlete, Heather knows first-hand the nutritional - and taste - benefits of potatoes from Prince Edward Island.

“A medium-sized potato has only 110 calories, provides half of our daily requirement of vitamin C, and has more potassium than a banana,” said Heather Moyse, Prince Edward Island Potatoes Brand Ambassador.

“Cooking recipes with potatoes is a great way to nourish your body.”

In addition to winning her bobsleigh gold medal at the Vancouver 2010 Games;Heather has also represented Canada in rugby and cycling competitions.

Prince Edward Island is Canada’s largest producer of potatoes, with approximately 330 growers on 250 family farms in the province. While 44 per cent of the Island’s crop stays in Canada for consumption, 35 per cent is shipped to the US, and 21 per cent goes out to 28 other countries around the world. The Prince Edward Island Potato Board is a producer association dedicated to supporting the highest performance of an economically and environmentally sustainable potato industry.
