Food and drink manufacturers pledged to considerably cut packaging and food waste by 2010, in a five point plan initiated by their trade body, the Food and Drink Federation (FDF).

The industry want to reduce the 4.6 million tonnes of food packaging that ended up in UK households in 2005. The FDF wants to reduce this by 340,000 tonnes by 2010, a cut of 13.5%. It also wants to send zero food and packaging waste to landfill from 2015.

Speaking at the launch of its programme, FDF chair of sustainability and competitiveness steering group Fiona Dawson said:"FDF, on behalf of its members, is today making a public commitment to make a significant, collective contribution to improving the environment by targeting those areas where we can make the biggest difference.
FDF have over 200 members including McCain Foods, Walkers and Tate &Lyle.
