The potato: a guarantee for regional food security and prosperity

With a view to the upcoming state elections on September 1, 2024, in Thuringia (Thüringen), the German Potato Trade Association (DKHV) underlines the outstanding importance of the potato as a renewable resource and cornerstone of regional value creation. In times of growing uncertainty and global challenges, the local potato stands for continuity, tradition, and security on the plates of Thuringian families.

The potato, grown and marketed by small and medium-sized companies in Thuringian regions on around 1,200 hectares in 2023, ensures the independence of the region's diet and supports numerous jobs in Thuringia. Its regionally anchored production guarantees short delivery routes and supports sustainable agriculture that protects the environment and preserves natural resources.

Therefore, the German Potato Trade Association is calling on voters to cast a strong vote for regional agriculture and the food industry in the state elections. The Association is committed to a policy that focuses on continuity and predictability and does not create further bureaucratic hurdles, but rather ensures the framework for flourishing domestic production.

The potato stands for more than just a simple food. It embodies an entire value chain that extends from the crop to processing in related companies, taking into account the interests of consumers as best as possible.
