The Sackett family has been growing potatoes in Michigan for six generations since first planting 20 acres of the crop in 1905.

During the last weeks, free buy prices from different North-western European quotations have dramatically fallen, no longer allowing to cover production costs. North-western European Potato growers (NEPG) respond.

During its last meeting on November 9, 2022, the NEPG estimated that the total potato production 2022 in the NEPG zone (EU-04) will be down by 6 % compared to last year.

During its last meeting prior to Potato Europe 2022, the North-western European Potato Growers (NEPG) estimates that global potato production in the NEPG zone (EU-04) will be down by 7 to 11 %.

De NEPG schat dat de totale oogst dit seizoen 27,9 miljoen ton zal zijn, als alle aardappelen inderdaad geoogst zullen worden. Dat is 4,5% of 1 miljoen ton meer dan vorig seizoen in de 5 grootste aardappellanden.

De vraag naar aardappelproducten in de foodservice is met 50 tot 60% gedaald net zoals de
potentiële afzet op de exportmarkten is gedaald, waardoor de aardappelverwerkende industrie
haar capaciteit en behoefte aan grondstoffen heeft verminderd. In de NEPG-landen op het vaste
land zal al meer dan 2 miljoen ton waarschijnlijk niet worden verwerkt.

De Belgische aardappelverwerkende industrie heeft vorig jaar, ondanks de moeilijke groeiomstandigheden als gevolg van extreme hitte en droogte en dit zowel in het seizoen 2018-2019 als 2019-2020.

De coronacrisis heeft de vrije markt voor de aardappelen volledig doen instorten. Zowel de PCA/Fiwap- als de Belgapom-prijsnotering werd geschorst omdat er een gebrek aan transacties was op de vrije aardappelmarkt.

On 4 and 5 September the international potato fair PotatoEurope 2019 will take place in
Tournai. That the fair continues to grow is demonstrated by the fact that there are almost
20% more exhibitors from 17 different countries.

De aardappel is niet uit het nieuws te branden. Deze week bleek dat Belgische telers in Noord-Frankrijk neerstrijken omdat het Belgische areaal bijna uitgeput is.
