On October 26th, in Balcarce, Argentina, the English company specialized in potato storage, Restrain, organized an event to launch their technology in the region.

The event was organized by their international consultant and former McCain employee, Daniel Caldiz, and was attended by top representatives from companies such as Simplot, McCain, Lambweston, Pepsico, HZPC, and other clients and service providers.

Restrain is a company that has developed a revolutionary technology for potato storage by using ethylene gases to inhibit sprouting.

Their solution is an alternative to the historical use of CIPC, Restrain being much more environmentally friendly and generally easier to use.

Additionally, Restrain has another working protocol that achieves the opposite of inhibition. Through different concentrations of ethylene, their technology can also stimulate multiple sprouting, becoming a valuable tool for seed potato companies.

Daniel Caldiz, Former Global Director of Agronomy at McCain:

"It is a simple, smart, and sustainable technology, easy to apply with all kinds of advantages. It leaves no residue in either the warehouses or the product."

"Moreover, the new generation of equipment features remote data transmission to the cloud, making remote warehouse monitoring more accessible. Given its advantages, we hope processing companies will adopt it soon."
During the event, in addition to presenting the functionalities of the technology, several users provided testimonials. Among them, representatives from both Simplot and Lamb Weston storage departments spoke, both of whom were very satisfied with the results and, above all, with having found an alternative to the controversial CIPC.

The event also featured Restrain's Director of Strategy, Dirk Garos, who shared his vision of the future with the Potatopro team.

Dirk Garos:

"I am convinced that the potato markets in Latin America will experience very rapid development. At the moment, European factories are facing significant challenges due to the Green Deal and the availability of land; the global market is growing faster than Europeans can manage right now."
Since 2019, Europe has banned the use of CIPC to inhibit tuber sprouting. That same year, Restrain entered Latin America, and today it operates in more than 40 countries worldwide, providing its services for the storage of over 1.3 million tonnes of potatoes.

Dirk Garos:

"I believe that people in Latin America are more receptive to new ideas and are looking for the best ways to progress, which will drive faster growth than in traditional European markets. I wouldn't be surprised if we are present in 60 countries or even more in a couple of years. "

"The world is experiencing exponential growth in the use of technology. We are technology providers; we do not supply chemicals but rather sustainable technology that enables companies not only to control the sprouting of their potatoes but also to monitor their warehouses in real-time."

"There is no going back to more primitive working methods. This is just the beginning."
