Lower potato yield in Sinaloa, Mexico

Lower potato yield in Sinaloa, Mexico
juni 11, 2015
The potato harvest production in Sinaloa, Mexico ended slightly lower than expected because of the problems brought about by climate change, which reduced yields by nearly 2 tons per hectare this year.

Filiberto Chain Payan, president of the Specialized Potato Section of the particular sector, said this explained why the average yield at the end of the season was 25 tons per hectare and not the normal 27 tons per hectare achieved under normal conditions.

There were production problems in different crops attributed to climate change, which has been generating atypical conditions for agriculture.

Payan said that they had already marketed most of the production, which was allocated to meet the needs of raw material in the domestic industry and to the market for fresh consumption, which are increasingly showing a preference for the high quality product produced in Sinaloa.

He said that so far they had embarked around 250,000 tons of the product nationwide, nearly 100,000 tons of which corresponded to the national potato industry, 10,000 were saved to be used as seeds and the rest was sold in different markets for fresh consumption. The remaining production, he said, will be marketed without any problems in the market.

Sinaloa produced one thousand tons of potatoes this year

The leader said that the decline in production was not exclusive to the potato sector, as it had also extended to other production areas such as corn, beans and other seasonal crops that also showed a decline in production because of problems brought about by climate change, such as the rise in temperatures at the end of the last year, the presence of rain at different stages of cultivation, and even wind problems in specific areas, such as the Carrizo Valley and Fuerte Valley, which led to problems with entire batches of corn and wheat.
