ULSTER snack giant Tayto has issued an appeal to farmers across the Province to help it meet a major shortfall in potatoes required to produce its famous crisps.
The firm has orders involving 20,000 tonnes of potatoes this year but only 9,000 secured so far as managing director Stephen Hutchinson explained yesterday.
As a result, he said, the firm was taking the dramatic step of advertising for growers prepared to get crops in the ground in the next few weeks in order to supply the Tandragee firm with the vital spuds by September.
“We need potato contractors in Northern Ireland because we can’t get enough spuds such is the demand at present.
