McCain Foods Australia receives government grant to save water in Ballarat

November 12, 2007
The Minister for Regional and Rural Development, Jacinta Allan, today announced a $635,474 Brumby Government grant for a Central Highlands Water project which will help McCain Foods Australia/New Zealand reduce its potable water use by a further 15 per cent.

Speaking in Ballarat, Ms Allan said the McCain Water Minimisation Project was part of a strategy by Central Highlands Water to manage the serious water deficit in this region, with current water storages at 12.7 per cent.

McCain Foods is one of the largest customers on the Ballarat water supply, Ms Allan said.

The McCain Foods project involves a number of initiatives including the capture of waste water followed by the treatment and re-use as a substitute for potable water.

These initiatives will boost the amount of internal water recycling and eliminate water use in certain parts of the food production process and reduce spillage within the processing areas.

Combined with previous water savings measures, this project will help reduce demand for potable water at McCain by 50 per cent.
