Las patatas fueron introducidas en Tanzania en la década de 1920 por estaciones misioneras alemanas en las tierras altas del sur de Tanzania (entonces la colonia alemana de Tanganyika), donde los agricultores locales comenzaron a cultivarlas en pequeños huertos.
