La patata se cultiva en Túnez al menos desde mediados del siglo XIX, posiblemente durante mucho más tiempo. Se sugiere que las patatas se introdujeron desde Sicilia ya en el siglo XVII.
Hasta hace poco, la producción se limitaba a unas pocas zonas de la costa mediterránea, y la demanda de los consumidores, sobre todo de los expatriados, se satisfacía en gran medida con las importaciones.
Tras la independencia en 1956, la popularidad del cultivo ha aumentado considerablemente, y el gobierno ha fomentado la expansión de la producción de patata con el fin de reducir las importaciones de patata procedentes de Francia e Italia.
En la actualidad, más de 25.000 hectáreas, que equivalen al 17% del total de la tierra cultivada en Túnez, se utilizan para la producción de patata. Este cultivo es el segundo más importante del país después del tomate.
