Potato prices in Ukraine are going down fast and are already below last year’s

Septiembre 01, 2023
Since the beginning of the week, potato prices in Ukraine have decreased significantly. As analysts of the EastFruit project note, the main reason for negative trends in the potato market was the beginning of harvesting in the key production regions and, as a result, an increase in the potato supply.

According to the daily price and market monitoring of EastFruit, the wholesale prices for potatoes already vary in the range of UAH 6-9/kg (USD 0.16-0.25/kg), which is on average 17% less than at the end of the last working week.

In addition, farmers say that buyers have become more demanding about the quality of the tuber. If in 2022 it was possible to sell even small potatoes without much effort, now such a product is in a very low demand. Only large wholesale batches of the medium-size potatoes are sold relatively well.

Noteworthy, that at the moment, potato prices on the Ukrainian market are already on average 10% lower than in the same period of last year.

Market participants EastFruit spoke to remain quite pessimistic about the price prospects. According to them, considering the rather large volumes of potatoes on the market, it is impossible to expect prices to grow in the near future.
