This Dewulf potato harvester digs up Puikula near the Arctic Circle

A 22-year-old Dewulf R3000S 2-row, self-propelled potato harvester, harvests recently in the Finnish Lapland. The machine harvests 70 km South of the Arctic Circle and is the most northern Dewulf harvester in the world.

Mr Juha Jankkila bought his harvester through Finnish Dewulf dealer Avagro in 2014. The R3000S harvests over 40ha every season with a low cost of ownership, which makes the harvester very economical.

Puikula

Jankkila harvests a landrace potato called Puikula, a variety that grows best in Finnish Lapland and has been awarded the Protected Designation of Origin certification, a guarantee of provenance and quality.
 

It is a floury variety that has been cultivated since the 1700s and has a strong flavour due to the near-continuous summer daylight in Lapland. These potatoes have a growing season of just 80-90 days. Then, in late autumn, they must be harvested within 10-14 days, after which they are distributed throughout Finland.
