The sad state of cold storages in India

Junio 09, 2008
This news from Deesa town in Gujarat reiterates the need for India to focus on building new warehouses across the country to help farmers keep their harvest in safe places.

In a recent incident, farmers in Deesa in north Gujarat lost their potato harvest worth crores of rupees due to faulty cooling facility at a state-run facility.

Farmers said that their potato crop was stored in an Agriculture Produce Market Committees (APMC) run old storage and when they checked their stock a few days later, they found that the potatoes had perished.

According to officials, the APMC’s cold storage at Deesa has a capacity of 151,000 bags of 50-kg potatoes.

The APMC officials are mum on the incident but traders and framers have confirmed that potato crop stored in the cold storage was damaged due to some fault in the cooling system.
