Frito-lay lays off 25 in Mission Plant

Diciembre 17, 2007
Frito-Lay cut 25 employees from its Mission production plant, after “Nutritas” — a healthy baked potato-and-vegetable stick — struck out in the Mexican snack market.

The plant, which produces chips for Mexican consumers, closed down a production line at the beginning of December, according to a Frito-Lay spokeswoman. And another 17 employees were reassigned to producing potato chips.
The plant is hurt by U.S. Food and Drug Administration rules that prevent them from packaging Mexican-made toys or seasoning packets in the U.S.-produced chips, Townsend said. When Frito-Lay’s Mexican potato chip brand, Sabritas, runs promotions that include such packaging, production at the Mission plant is hurt.
