Variety Description

UNICA is a Peruvian cultivar for fresh market and french fries with new tolerance and resistance traits in adverse environment conditions.

UNICA is a variety that was selected and evaluated by the CIP for more than 7 years, planted in experiments in more than 20 locations.

It has resistance attributes and earliness that make it attractive for farmers involved in potato cultivation. The adaptation of the UNICA to different environments allows a wide distribution geographic, in regions of the Coast and Sierra del Peru.

Good features for consumption fresh and for processing into strips, represent a better income alternative for farmers because of the demand that can generate in the market.

Origin and Breeding History

UNICA is the result of research participatory with farmers (Associations of Producers), the national institutions of research in the agricultural sector (University National "San Luis Gonzaga" of Ica) and the International Potato Center (CIP).

The name of UNICA, is a recognition to the National University "San Luis Gonzaga" of Ica, as the alma mater of professionals in said region and represents an abbreviation and initials of said university.
