自1960年以来，收获面积已经减半，注册的马铃薯种植者从7万名减少至只有3000名。即便如此，英国2007年的产量达 560万吨、平均每公顷产量超过40吨，仍名列马铃薯生产国的第11位。

马铃薯在16世纪末来到联合王国，并于1597年开始在伦敦种植。这种新的作物很快地在爱尔兰扎根，但在英格兰和苏格兰却未能如此。
在18和19世纪的工业革命期间，城镇和新劳动阶层的兴起形成了对廉价、高热能和非谷物食品的需求，这时马铃薯在英国才得到发展。其他的就众人皆知了。到了1948年，英格兰和威尔士的马铃薯产量达到高峰，种植面积将近40万公顷。
