马铃薯在玻利维亚安第斯山脉种植了数千年，如今与大豆一起已成为该国最重要的粮食作物。种植马铃薯的农民大约有20万农民，种植面积大约13.5万公顷，种植者绝大多数是小农，他们种植马铃薯主要用于家庭消费。
