巴西是世界主要块根作物木薯的起源中心。然而，直到19世纪末欧洲移民将马铃薯引入巴西南部相对较温暖的地区之前，马铃薯的种植实际上并不为巴西人所知（在圣保罗州，全年几乎所有月份都可种植马铃薯）。
虽然被当地称为 batata inglesa 的马铃薯在巴西农业中依然属于次要作物，但是该国却是拉丁美洲的第二大马铃薯生产国，2007年的产量超过了330万吨。在过去的15年中，马铃薯的产量平均每年增加5%，并且每公顷平均产量已经从14吨增加到24吨。
