1991年苏联解体时，哈萨克斯坦每年在24万公顷土地上生产250万吨马铃薯。在随后动乱的十年中，马铃薯的种植面积和产量持续减少，到1998年降至120万吨。
自那以后，产量开始回升，主要是因为每公顷平均产量提高，即从1998年的7.6吨提高到2007年的15吨以上。那一年，哈萨克斯坦的马铃薯种植者从不到15万公顷的土地上收获了大约240万吨马铃薯。
如今，马铃薯在哈萨克斯坦是仅次于小麦的重要粮食作物，年人均消费量为100公斤。尽管大部分马铃薯用来新鲜食用或用作饲料，但是近年来加工马铃薯产品的出口量大幅上升，从2000年的1000吨增至2005年的1.5万吨以上。
