荷属东印度公司于1795年前后将马铃薯带到西爪哇，并由北苏门答腊高原的巴塔克农民在15年的时间里培育了这种kentang holanda（即“荷兰块茎”）。
如今，印度尼西亚是东南亚地区最大的马铃薯生产国。从1960年到90年代中期，该国马铃薯产量的年增长速度接近9％，而且自2003年以来，年平均产量超过100万吨。马铃薯的种植遍及所有岛屿和海拔高度在800至1800米的高原地区，其主要生产者是小农。
马铃薯种植者在很大程度上依赖从德国和荷兰进口的种薯。虽然主要是苏门答腊北部的一部分马铃薯被用来出口，但该国收获的大部分马铃薯是作为新鲜食品供大城市消费的。印度尼西亚在2006年进口了大约3.2万吨马铃薯，主要用于加工食品。
