尽管第一个马铃薯块茎种植在丹麦皇家植物园的时间是1642年，但丹麦农民直到将近一个世纪后才开始种植，大约在1720年。据信马铃薯的种植是从英格兰和爱尔兰引进的，或者是通过从法国移民的胡格诺派教徒引进的。
2007年丹麦的马铃薯产量总计约160万吨，产量为每公顷39吨。马铃薯总产量的三分之一以上直接作为新鲜马铃薯消费。丹麦马铃薯一半以上被加工成马铃薯淀粉和马铃薯粉，9％被用作种薯进行重新种植。
