The red potato harvest has begun at Black Gold Farms’ operation in Winamac, IN, located about two hours south of Chicago and the same distance north of Indianapolis. Focusing exclusively on red potatoes for the fresh market, the Winamac farm grows several hundred acres of premier quality Norland and Dark Red Norland varieties, which will be harvested between now and the end of August.

Mother Nature has smiled on Indiana this summer, and Black Gold Farms is expecting a strong yield of exceptional quality red potatoes from its Indiana location. Black Gold Farms has a number of customers who have been enthusiastically anticipating the availability of these Indiana-grown potatoes, including at least one retail chain that will be showcasing Black Gold Farms red potatoes with a locally grown promotion.

The Winamac farm is a vital link in Black Gold Farms’ promise of year-round availability of fresh red potatoes grown on its own farms, a cycle that starts each year in Texas and then transitions to North Carolina, Arkansas and Missouri before moving up to Indiana and finally back to the Red River Valley in North Dakota and Minnesota.

Nathan Libey, Winamac, Indiana, farm manager:

“We see the Indiana crop as the perfect fit to ensure that we have a year-round supply of Black Gold Farms grown quality red potatoes for our customers."

"The crop looks great, and we’re very excited to see this product on store shelves.”

Red potato sales consistently outperform the overall fresh potato category and continue to take share from Russet potatoes. Retailers ring up a price-per-pound on Reds averaging more than 60 percent higher than Russets, according to Nielsen FreshFacts.
