The Michigan Potato Industry Commission (MPIC) appointed Michael Wenkel as its new executive director, effective Aug. 31. He succeeds Ben Kudwa, who has held the position since 1986 and is transitioning into retirement.
Wenkel comes to MPIC from Michigan Farm Bureau in Lansing, Mich., where he was employed for 17 years – the last nine as director of its membership and field services department.
“Mike built an outstanding record there through his organizational and communication skills,” said seed grower Dennis Iott, who headed the committee in charge of securing Kudwa’s successor. “He administered more than 200,000 memberships, directed the field representatives and was instrumental in developing strong member leadership at the grassroots level.”
Wenkel has a farm background and participated in FFA activities in high school. His voluntary work with the state and national organizations led to his receiving the Honorary American FFA Degree last year from the National FFA Association. He has earned the Certified Association Executive designation from the American Society of Association Executives. He is a 1990 graduate of Michigan State University.
Kudwa will remain with MPIC on a part-time basis during the transition.
