Snack-chip technology with a pop

五月 23, 2011

By now you’ve seen, heard or crunched on the new snack craze that’s popped its way into store aisles. A quick side-by-side nutrition-facts label review demonstrates these snack options are the healthier alternative to many of the other snack foods that crowd the aisles. These new snack chips are not baked, they are not fried;they are “popped.” And it’s not the popping we are accustomed to in popping corn kernels.

Popchips are made from potatoes processed into tiny pellets or kernel size pieces. The potato pellets are mixed together in a hopper and then portioned out into molds, where the pellets receive a few seconds of combined heat and pressure and then they pop. Further down the production line a little bit of oil is added.
