The American Heart Association published in their journal the results of a meta-analysis of the relation between Potassium Intake and stroke.
This is of particular interest to the potato industry since potatoes and potato products are a major dietary source of potassium.
Ten independent prospective studies, with a total of 8695 stroke cases and 268 276 participants, were included in the meta-analysis. Researchers observed a statistically significant inverse association between potassium intake and risk of stroke. For every 1000-mg/day increase in potassium intake, the risk of stroke decreased by 11%
In previous research, Potassium intake has been inconsistently associated with risk of stroke.
