Food Prices

Lower retail prices for several foods, including eggs, whole milk, cheddar cheese, chicken breast, sirloin tip roast and ground chuck resulted in a decrease in the American Farm Bureau Federation’s Fall Harvest Marketbasket Survey. However, potato prices were up slightly.

The FAO Food Price Index (FFPI) averaged 165.6 points in August 2016, up 3 points (1.9 percent) from July and almost 7 percent above the corresponding period last year. The August value of the Index is the highest since May 2015.

The FAO Food Price Index (FFPI) - an indicator of global food prices - averaged 161.9 points in July 2016, 1.3 points (0.8 percent) below June and 1.4 percent below the corresponding month last year.

The FAO Food Price Index averaged 163.4 points in June 2016, 6.6 points (4.2 percent) higher than in May. Not only did the June increase mark the fifth consecutive monthly rise, but it also represented the largest monthly increase in the past four years.

The FAO Food Price Index (FFPI) averaged 155.8 points in May 2016, 3.2 points (2.1 percent) higher than in April, but still 7 percent below the corresponding period last year.

The softening Canadian dollar has in many cases driven up the cost of imported produce and this is being reflected in grocery store prices. However, one staple vegetable that has not experienced the same jump in prices is Prince Edward Island Potatoes.

The FAO Food Price Index dropped almost 19% since the start of 2015. In December 2015 the FAO Food Price Index averaged 154.1 points, down 1.5 points (1.0 percent) from its revised November value.

After mostly declines since March 2014, the FAO Food Price Index went up sharply in October 2015
