For most of the 20th century, Europe was the undisputed world leader in potato production.
While that honour has now passed to Asia, seven European countries are among the top 10 global producers.
The continent also has the highest level of potato consumption in the world (almost 90 kg per capita per year).
Many western European countries are shifting from potato growing to processing and production of seed tubers for export. (Source: International Year of the Potato)
