Solely supplied by Branston, Italian new potatoes are returning to Tesco for the seventh consecutive year, to keep pace with the increasing demand for fresh seasonal new potatoes.

This is the last seasonal new potato of the calendar year and is due to last five weeks.

George Christoudias, sales and marketing director at Branston:

“Our research shows that shoppers engage with new season potatoes as they appreciate their fluffy skins and fresh taste.”

“In season from late October new potatoes from Italy are a highlight in the seasonal calendar.”

“Renowned for their creamy texture, Italian potatoes are a new potato that will bring back memories of summertime with their light flavour.”

Italian farmer Giuseppe Distaso is a third-generation potato grower and his family’s company has been growing potatoes in the Puglia region for more than a century.

They’re grown along a ten mile strip of coastline in free-draining sandy soil and harvested by hand to protect their delicate skins.

George Christoudias:

“The Italian climate in the late summer is perfect for planting new potatoes, while here in the UK we’re busy harvesting and eating ours.”

“By October they’re ready to harvest and ship over to be enjoyed at their best.”
Branston, which has sites in Lincoln, Scotland and the South West, will be producing and packing more than 300 tonnes of the crop for Tesco. They are available loose or in a 750g bag.

To inspire the general public and champion seasonal potatoes’ health, versatility and affordability, Branston has launched a consumer initiative, Seasonal Spuds.

The dedicated website and associated social media channels host recipes for seasonal new potatoes, as well as general information about potatoes.
