In the 1950's and 60's potatoes were grown on nearly every Finnish farm to feed the family and extended family. That is no longer the case, potato cultivation has developed into a specialized business.
Most potato production in Finland occurs along the west coast of the country, with the region Ostrobothnia (around the city Vaasa) as the main center, due to its favorable climate and soil.
In 2013 the Potato Production in Finland was 621.700 tonnes, harvested from 22.100 hectare.
In 2011 the average potato consumption in Finland was 66,71 kg/capita/year. The range of potato varieties offered in Finland is well over 60, significantly above what's common in most other countries. Potatoes are increasingly consumed as processed products.
