SV Agri conducted its annual variety show featuring Ganesh variety of potatoes, attracting key stakeholders from the chips processing industry.

Representatives from leading companies, including ITC Foods, Pamper Ovenfresh, Enjoice Foods, Pratap Snacks, and Guiltfree Industries Ltd., as well as prominent Bengal-based suppliers of processing-grade potatoes, were present to witness the impressive performance of the Ganesh variety.

Ganesh variety of potatoes have been imported by SV Agri from the world leader in potato seed production i.e. Agrico Netherlands. This event focused on the unique traits of the Ganesh variety, which have shown remarkable results even in September.

Representatives from SV Agri highlighted that, despite the challenges of long storage periods, Ganesh demonstrated negligible Total Potato Defects (TPOD), zero UC (Undesirable Colour), minimal sprouting even after three CIPC treatments, and satisfactory levels of solid content—making it a strong contender in the processing-grade potato market.

Ganesh also boasts other favorable traits, such as an 80-90 day maturity cycle, the ability to resist waterlogging, negligible surface greening, and higher yields compared to other varieties available in the market. These traits are particularly valuable given the challenges posed by changing climatic conditions.

In Bengal and across India, it is rare to find a variety that can maintain stable TPOD levels in September and October after 6-8 months of storage. This makes the Ganesh variety immensely valuable for processors and farmers.

The impact of climate change was also a point of focus at the event. Untimely rains and waterlogging have increasingly led farmers to resow their crops, adding to cultivation costs and significantly impacting both the quality and productivity of their produce. The reduced storability of such crops further exacerbates post-harvest losses.

Ganesh, with its ability to resist waterlogging and its early bulking characteristics, offers a solution to these critical challenges faced by farmers. SV Agri's demonstration not only illustrated the Ganesh variety’s potential in addressing these issues but also emphasized its benefits to the processing industry in terms of stable quality, better yields, and reduced post-harvest losses.

With such promising traits, Ganesh holds the potential to become a game-changer in the Indian potato industry.
