Potatoes South Australia appoints CEO

Potatoes South Australia has appointed a leading industry stalwart as its inaugural chief executive officer.

Jonathan Eccles started this week in the new role of CEO of Potatoes South Australia. Mr Eccles was previously the CEO of Australian Banana Growers’ Council where he helped steer the banana industry through last year’s devastating Queensland floods and the aftermath of Cyclone Yasi.

In announcing his appointment, Chairman of the Board of Potatoes South Australia, Nick Psevdos, said “He and his fellow directors were delighted to have Jonathan on board to help develop and lead the new organisation. His skills and experience in industry development, communications, marketing and leadership as well as his extensive horticultural background and passion were an asset to Potatoes South Australia.”

Potatoes South Australia has been in operation for only a few months after gaining State-wide support from potato growers, packing sheds, wholesalers and corporate entities.

The newly formed organisation will represent and promote the interests of potato industry stakeholders, undertake research and development, commission marketing and consumer education programs and provide policy advice to Government regarding potato industry issues.

South Australia produces over 485,000 tonnes per year and is the nation’s largest producer of fresh potatoes and a significant contributor to the processed market, employing over 2,000 people.

“With all aspects of potato production – fresh, French fry, crisping and seed sectors happening in South Australia, we are now big enough to represent ourselves and be in charge of our own destiny.” Mr Psevdos said.
