Frito-Lay to expand in Killingly, CT, preserve 500 jobs

juni 21, 2010
Governor M. Jodi Rell has announced that the state is providing a $3 million Urban Act grant to help snack chip maker Frito-Lay North America expand and improve its operations in Killingly, preserving more than 500 jobs.

Frito-Lay evaluated a number of existing plants and selected Killingly for expansion.

The $66 million project will result in additional production and warehouse space and a larger wastewater treatment system for the facility.

The project will add 100,000 square feet to the plant and require new machinery and equipment.

“When the state is looking to invest in a company, we take many factors into account – including the depth of the company’s commitment to Connecticut’s people and communities,” Governor Rell said. “Frito-Lay is one business that has shown it is deeply dedicated to the state, its workers and our environment. Expanding its operations here sustains quality jobs that require ongoing training to keep up with Frito-Lay’s technology improvements and innovations.

“Connecticut has also benefitted from Frito-Lay’s nationwide effort to improve its energy efficiency,” the Governor said. “Last year Frito-lay unveiled a new on-site cogeneration system, which is helping to reduce its carbon footprint. I am proud to support Frito-Lay’s expansion in Killingly.”

The Urban Act funding, administered by the Department of Economic and Community Development, will be used for upgrades and expansion of the wastewater treatment equipment.

In addition, the Connecticut Development Authority Board of Directors today approved a sales and use tax exemption of up to $1.5 million on construction materials for the project.
