New York City has issued nearly 700 citations to restaurant chains for not complying with new calorie posting rules. McDonald’s had most violations.
The city has issued 682 violations to restaurant chains since a new law took effect five months ago requiring them to post calorie information on their menu boards.
About 300 citations were issued during the first six weeks the rules took effect, which was considered a grace period, and did not carry fines. Since then, 388 violations were issued that carry fines between $200 and $2,000 each.
McDonald’s led the chains with the highest number of violations—103—while Dunkin Donuts was second with 89.
"We're working with our owner-operators and the New York Board of Health to ensure our compliance with the regulation,"said Jennifer Nagy, marketing manager for McDonald's New York region.
