  • Highlights International Potato Exhibition PEI: GPS and modified hilling technology

P.E.I. potato farmers, as well as visitors from across the country, gathered at the Charlottetown Civic Centre over the weekend for the International Potato Technology Expo.
More than a hundred booths, including everything from seed to harvesting, were on display, and a common theme among the exhibits was assisting the environment.

At one booth, Will MacNeill, owner of Atlantic Precision Agri-Services Inc. in O’Leary, was showing how Global Positioning System (GPS) monitoring -used in tractors- can help the environment:
“The most common use is when people are spraying herbicides or spreading fertilizers. It’s to eliminate any overlap and to reduce chemical use.’’
Gwen Vessey, a soil conservation specialist with the P.E.I. Department of Agriculture, recently helped to complete a two-year research project involving a hiller technology, which addressed both the runoff and moisture retention problems in the soil.
