Transformative Shift in Potato Varieties: A Key Factor for Increasing Farmers' Income Amidst Climate Change and Emerging Market Demands - Hemant Gaur SV Agri recently organized its Annual Variety and Seed Farm Show in Jalandhar from January 8th to January 10th, aiming to delve into the nuances of new potato varieties and their increasing significance.

With over 500 attendees, the event attracted diverse stakeholders from the potato value chain, including farmers, traders from various states, F.P.O. representatives, cold store owners, seed producers, agri-input companies, financial institutions, processors, and development consulting organizations such as Grant Thornton and Access Development Services.

Notably, the World Bank's partner organization, the International Finance Corporation, was also in attendance.

The three-day event featured more than 20 variety demonstrations, showcasing varieties from esteemed sources like C.P.R.I. and Agrico, a leading potato seed plant based in Holland.

Participants were enlightened about the expanding market for French fries, with information provided on over six related varieties.

Additionally, the exhibition highlighted more than six innovative chip varieties, exhibiting favourable results amidst changing climates when compared to traditional varieties like L.R.

These showcased chips demonstrated superior production, packaging, and internal quality compared to Chipsona, among others.

The exhibition also included displays of future ration varieties such as Lavender, Cyrus, Damont, and Kuroda.

A special mention was made of Carisma potato, recognized for its low glycemic index, making it suitable for consumption by individuals with diabetes.

The focal point of the exhibition was on new varieties tailored to climate change and emerging market needs.

Heat-tolerant, waterlogging-tolerant, late blight-resistant, scab disease-resistant, and Golden Nematode-resistant varieties took center stage.

The majority of the showcased varieties served dual purposes, meeting both quality requirements for ration and processing markets, particularly in the realms of French fries and chips.

Attendees were treated to a comprehensive tour of SV Agri's net house and seed farm, during which they gained insights into the diverse initiatives undertaken by Siddhi Vinayak Agri Processing Private Limited.

The tour also shed light on the recent achievements of the organization, with a particular emphasis on its contributions to food engineering, B2B value-added potato products like starch, dried potato chips, and potato exports.

The event successfully facilitated knowledge exchange and collaboration among stakeholders, fostering advancements in the potato industry.
